Readers be advised- some spoilers may be in the following review.
Several years after the passing of his first wife, Matt’s daughter, Evelyn, has declared it’s time for him to find a new one. His best friend, Jacob Tanners, already has someone picked out for him. But is he ready to cross that bridge, especially with a woman he barely knows?
Annie’s just a barista determined to make people’s day a little brighter with a cup of coffee. One customer catches her attention more than the rest, but he never smiles, orders his coffee black, and he might be handsome, too. But appearance isn’t a good enough reason to fall in love. Is there anything else that can tie them together?
Short and sweet, this novelette should put a smile on your face.
Alright my lovelies,
I have yet another book review coming your way. This one is a little bit different from what I usually read. As a person who loves mystery and historical fiction, or literally anything having to do with pirates and fantasy, I was not at all expecting to enjoy a “slice-of-life” romance novelette. But with the coffee being sweet, and the characters even sweeter, I definitely am looking forward to sharing my thoughts of this story with you!
Favorite character
It would have to be the little girl, Evelyn, or Ev as her father so lovingly calls her. Having had such a traumatic thing happen to her at such a young age, she is ripe to the emotions and feelings of negativity. However, instead she looks at her father and decides that he needs some “help”. The way she interacts with the other characters in the story, even those we don’t really know much about (sorry Lisa….), makes one smile and cheers up even the most “solemn-faced” people.
My least favorite character:
I don’t have a least favorite character? All of these characters are precious and add to the story. There is no character causing drama or being over the top. Except…possibly Lisa? I don’t know…She must have messed up for a kid to cross her name off.
My absolute favorite scene- SPOILER
I love the second coffee shop scene. Having worked at a coffee shop myself, I remember trying to get the usually “grumpy” people to smile. I remember all the levels of “cringe” that I felt while I was attempting. But I also remember the sense of pride and the feeling of accomplishment when someone told me I made their day better, just by caring enough to try.
For the cons,
The only thing I really had a problem with was that it was sometimes hard to recognize I was reading the thoughts of a person. A paragraph would be going, then all of a sudden you would be halfway through someone’s thought. I feel like this could have been avoided if the author had put the thoughts in italics or quotes. But everything else was really good!
Content Concerns–
There was only one mention of alcohol. Evelyn was joking, and it was used to explain what happened to her mother. The fathers response showed that the actor was not glorifying the use of alcohol in any way. However, because it was joked about by a child, there was a little bit of concern there.
All in All
This was an absolutely precious read. It doesn’t take very long to read through it. I also have read it a couple times and each time it was just as adorable so it passed the second read test. It’s definitely “something sweet”, so if you get a moment to read through it, cuddle up with your favorite iced coffee (it’s hot out there people…) and take a little bit to enjoy it.
That’s all for right now! If you can, take a moment and check out the link below to get some information about Hannah Foster, the author of this precious piece! Maybe you can read the book for yourself? Or you can find another book of hers that you will enjoy even more! She has free short stories and even a link to her blog. Check it out and I will see you next time!
